Joint MIMO Communications and Sensing with Hybrid Beamforming Architecture and OFDM Waveform Optimization

In this article, we consider a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transceiver performing joint communications and sensing (JCAS) using fifth-generation New Radio (5G NR) standard-compliant orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) waveforms. Communication links are maintained with users having multiple spatial data streams over frequency-selective non-line-of-sight channels while simultaneously transmitting separate to different directions, where portion of the communication streams’ power is reallocated streams. The received reflections from environment due all transmit (TX) used obtain range–velocity range–angle maps. Through optimizing TX precoding receive combining, inter-user, intra-user, radar–communications interference also canceled. addition, transmitted in directions optimized minimize lower bounds direction-of-arrival delay estimates jointly, solution analytically derived. simulation results illustrate that JCAS system can reliably perform target detection minimizing compared communications-only scenario. Further, probability estimation errors be improved controlling capacity OFDM waveform, thereby indicating need appropriately choose optimization parameters an optimal trade-off.
